The Legend of the “Rats Birthday Song Generator”
If you have spent any time scrolling through gaming communities, meme forums, or TikTok, you’ve likely stumbled across a very specific, highly infectious earworm: “Rats, rats, we are the rats…”
What started as a quirky internet joke has evolved into a full-blown subculture of custom audio tools, affectionately known as the Rats Birthday Song Generator.
Where Did It Come From?
To understand why people use a generator to make rodent-themed birthday anthems, you have to look back at internet history. The phenomenon traces its roots back to Rat Movie: Mystery of the Mayan Treasure, a classic internet creation by streamer and content creator Jerma985.
Featured in the video was a catchy, slightly unhinged birthday song dedicated specifically to a character named Michael. The opening lines—“Rats, rats, we are the rats / Celebrating yet another birthday bash”—cemented themselves in meme history.
