Striking a Chord: Mastering “The Gift of Song” in Supergiant’s Hades

Supergiant Games’ critically acclaimed rogue-like Hades is celebrated for its fast-paced combat, rich mythological storytelling, and unforgettable soundtrack. Yet, amidst the blood, sweat, and repeated escapes from the Underworld, one of the game’s most charmingly persistent sub-plots takes place entirely in Zagreus’s bedroom.

Known as “The Gift of Song,” this minor prophecy is a test of patience, dedication, and musical perseverance. For players looking to complete every facet of the House of Hades, mastering the lyre is a badge of honor.

What is “The Gift of Song”?

“The Gift of Song” is a Fated List of Minor Prophecies quest given by the Fates. The official prophecy describes how the son of the god of the dead will someday learn to perform music halfway decently through the teachings of a solemn master of the art (referring to the House’s resident musician, Orpheus).

Fulfilling this prophecy requires more than just a quick interaction; it demands a long-term commitment to Zagreus’s hidden musical aspirations.

Step-by-Step Guide to Completing the Prophecy

Fulfilling the prophecy takes time across multiple escape attempts, tracking a specific progression:

1. Rebuild and Unlock

  • Free Orpheus: First, you must complete The Reluctant Musician minor prophecy by purchasing the work order from the House Contractor for 1 Diamond, allowing Orpheus to return to his post.
  • Acquire the Lyre: Purchase the Lyre decoration for Zagreus’s bedchamber from the House Contractor (also costing 1 Diamond).

2. The Sound of Agony (Interactions 1 to ~100)

When you first interact with the lyre in Zagreus’s room, the results are hilariously painful. Zagreus plucks a few mismatched, discordant notes that sound like a cat walking across a keyboard. Don’t be discouraged—this is supposed to happen!

3. Practice Makes Progress (~100 to ~200 Interactions)

You must interact with the lyre after escaping or dying, returning to your room between runs. Over time, the sound will subtly shift. Zagreus stops hitting outright clunkers and begins playing recognizable, albeit clumsy, little fragments of a melody.

4. Hitting the Milestone (~210+ Interactions)

Once you cross roughly 200 to 210 total interactions, Zagreus will finally play a genuinely pleasant, coherent, and melodious tune. Upon hearing this breakthrough performance, Zagreus will remark on his newfound musical competence.

5. Speak with Orpheus

After achieving this breakthrough and hearing Zagreus’s internal dialogue change, seek out Orpheus in the main hall. He will have a unique piece of dialogue acknowledging your hard work and persistence. Check your bedroom desk to fulfill the prophecy on the Fated List and claim your reward: 2 Ambrosia.

Why It Matters: The Heart of Hades

While 210 interactions can feel like a grind in a game built around high-octane action, “The Gift of Song” encapsulates what makes Hades special. It rewards slow-burn curiosity and routine. Taking a quiet moment between frantic dashes through Tartarus, Asphodel, and Elysium to awkwardly strum a lyre grounds the game’s chaotic mythology in personal growth and quiet humor.

So, the next time you respawn in a pool of blood at the House of Hades, don’t rush straight to the weapons door. Stop by the bedroom, pluck the strings, and take one step closer to becoming a musical maestro of the Underworld.
