Personalised vs. Personalized: Which Spelling Is Right for You?

Have you ever paused mid-sentence, finger hovering over the keyboard, wondering whether to drop an s or a z into your copy? You are certainly not alone. Whether you are crafting a marketing email for a custom jewelry brand, writing a software user interface, or editing an academic paper, the choice between personalised and personalized is a classic micro-dilemma.

The good news? Both spellings are completely correct. The difference doesn’t stem from a typo or a strict grammatical rule; rather, it comes down to a transatlantic divide in regional spelling conventions.

The Core Divide: Geography Dictates the Choice

At its heart, this variation is a classic case of British English versus American English.

  • Personalized (with a “z”): This is the standard spelling in American English (US). It is also widely used in global tech platforms and international business contexts due to the heavy influence of American digital standards.
  • Personalised (with an “s”): This is the preferred spelling in British English (UK), as well as throughout the Commonwealth—including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, and India.

Why Is There a Spelling Difference?

To understand why a single word has two accepted outfits, we have to travel back through the history of the English language.

The suffix in question comes from the ancient Greek root -izein. Historically, words built with this root featured a z sound and were spelled accordingly. When many of these words later passed through French on their way into broader European use (such as personnaliser), the spelling drifted toward an s.
